PLAY THERAPY
PLAY THERAPY
When working with children, it is my job to create an an environment that meets the child on their level, in their world, to allow for the expression of feelings in the most age-appropriate way. As opposed to adolescents and adults who "talk out" their issues, a child's natural way of working out a problem is through play.
As, Gary Landreth, the father of Child Centered Play Therapy Play once said, "Toys are children's words, and play is their language."
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), designed for children ages 3-8, uses play to help children express themselves, process their experiences and develop coping skills. CCPT aims to create a safe and consistent environment that allows children to grow.
CCPT is based on the idea that children are capable of healthy growth when given the right conditions. A trained play therapist creates a safe and accepting environment where the child can direct the play session and express themselves through play and symbols. The therapist's role is to facilitate the child's development through the therapeutic relationship.
